Thailand: entry requirements and regulations in 2024

Every year Thailand strengthens its reputation as one of the world’s most desirable holiday and tourism destinations. When planning a trip to this picturesque country, it is important to be aware of all current entry rules and requirements. Our article will help you prepare for a trip in 2024, taking into account the recent changes in legislation, the situation in the world and the expert experience of people who have just come here or have been living in the country long enough to share tips with tourists about entering Thailand.

A visa to Thailand: do Russian citizens need it?

The Kingdom has traditionally been a friendly place for our fellow citizens, and in most cases Russian tourists do not have to obtain a visa for short-term entry to Thailand (the stamp you receive when crossing the border is enough). However, if you are considering a long stay or special activities, visa requirements may change, therefore it is always important to check the information before planning a trip. One of such novelties, for example, is the new temporary regime for Russian citizens, which came into effect in early May this year. What has actually changed?

  • Previously, our citizens could stay in the Kingdom without a visa for about 90 days. This period lasted from November 2023 to April 2024. A new government decree has changed everything.
  • As of May 2024, the visa-free period has been reduced to 60 days. From the beginning of May to the end of autumn 2024, tourists will be able to choose themselves what length of visa exemption stay is preferable for them – 30 or 60 days.

A tourist visa

However, if your trip involves staying in the country for more than 60 days, you should receive a tourist visa in advance. Such visas can be applied for at the Thai consulate as well as upon arrival. It is important to have all the necessary documents with you, including accommodation booking confirmation and return tickets.

  • Those who intend to live in Thailand for more than 60 days require a single-entry TR visa.
  • Tourist 6-month visa METV is suitable for those who want to stay in Thailand for a longer time, travel in and out multiple times. Though to receive it, you will have to provide official proof of employment and read the entry rules.

How long can you stay in Thailand without a visa?

There is a visa-free regime for Russian citizens who are allowed to enter Thailand for a period of up to 30 days. It applies to both tourist and private trips. You must have a passport valid for at least more than 6 months as compared to your length of stay. Later on, if you wish, your stay will be extended for another 30 days since the law, which came into effect on May 1, 2024, permits Russian citizens to remain in the country without a visa but with a stamp for 60 days only.

In order not to make a mistake with the timing, it is better to plan your trip in advance. This issue is especially relevant for those who plan to use the “endless visa-run” scheme. Previously, tourists could try to cross the border with one of the neighbouring countries, go on several excursions there, and come back to the Kingdom, “resetting” their period of stay. Now it is practically impossible.

Officially, you can do a visa run 3 times a year but application practice may be different – it just depends on your luck.

What documents do Russian citizens need for a trip to Thailand?

For unhindered entry to Thailand, you need to provide a valid passport (remember about its expiry date), confirmation of a hotel or other accommodation reservation, as well as a return ticket. It is also important to have sufficient funds with you to cover expenses during your stay, which may require a bank account statement. Do not forget about health insurance. Even if it is not mandatory, medical services are very expensive in the Kingdom, and it is easier to get a policy in advance.

What bank cards are accepted in Thailand?

In Thailand, international bank cards, including Visa and MasterCard, are taken nearly everywhere. However, please keep in mind that in some remote areas or small island hotels you may be asked to pay in cash. Due to the situation in the world, there are some problems when you enter Thailand. Bank cards issued in Russia are not accepted in the Kingdom, there are no money transfer systems as well. You can try using cards from Belarusian, Kazakh, and other foreign banks.

A quarantine hotel

At the time of writing, there are no restrictions on entry of Russian citizens into Thailand. Mandatory quarantine upon arrival has been cancelled, however, the situation with COVID-19 restrictions may change. We recommend you to follow official resources to get the latest information or check with airlines and travel agencies.
